The Work of His Own Hands

Do you ever stop and think about who you really are?

Now that I am able to call myself a senior in college–ah, scary!–I am asked more and more, “Sarah, what are you going to do once you graduate?  What do you want to be?”

For me this is always a tough question to answer.  Usually, I let out a sigh from the deep breath I took after anticipating the asking of this question.  Only then do I begin to answer with, perhaps, the one word that can answer it better than any clump of words that I put together… Well…..

In all of my attempts to answer the scary question, “What do you want to do with your life?”, I found that there was a better question that I should focus on instead: Who am I and what is my identity?

With a first thought, I would say the following are basic parts of my identity: the daughter of Leigh and Bruce, sister to Brad, Spanish major, wannabe author, lover of music, so on and so forth.  But even with these responses, I am missing the much bigger picture.

A verse that I have read every single night before going to bed for the past week is Psalm 138:8.

“The LORD will fulfill his purpose for me;

your steadfast love, O LORD, endures forever.

Do not forsake the work of your hands.”

-Psalm 138:8-

After reading this verse for a few days, that’s when I found an answer to one of my life’s biggest questions: Who am I?

The work of God’s hands.

This is one of those truths that is stated repeatedly, so much that it could be overlooked or not appreciated for the depth of its significance.  The work of God’s hands, His own hands.  (Even more bold though, is that the Psalmist can even stand before God in prayer and demand to not be forsaken… Something that as I write this now, I want to think about more…continuing on though…)

In addition to Ziploc bags, DNA tightly wound into chromosomes, or a breath-taking sunset, we are the work of God’s own hands.  His love for us will endure forever, and no matter what doubt we have about ourselves or the future, He will fulfill His purpose for us.  What greater of a promise is this than anything we could ask of Him? With the fulfilling of His purpose for us, we can rest assured that whatever happens in life will be overcome,  even overwhelmed with His love.

So the next time you’re wondering who you are or what you want to be, remember this: YOU are the work of God’s own hands, and He will fulfill His purpose for you.  We’ll just have to wait and see and TRUST that He will reveal what that means.  Much easier said than done, right?  😉

“But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience.”

Romans 8:25

God WILL fulfill the purpose that He has for your life.

You are the work of His hands.

With all of my love,

sarah 🙂
